Sedation Makes It Relaxing

Nitrous oxide can be administered to keep you relaxed throughout your treatment. This safe gas is adjustable, giving you what you need to keep you comfortable. Once the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly, so you can drive yourself home after your procedure.

A Closer Look at Dental Implants

A dental implant is a prosthetic tooth root, typically made from biocompatible titanium, that fuses with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. After an implant has fused with the jawbone, we can attach a connector piece called an abutment and your final restoration, resulting in a complete tooth replacement from root to crown.

The Dental Implant Timeline

Depending on your needs, your dental implant procedure timeline may vary slightly, but will generally include these steps:

Consultation

Our implant dentists will review your overall health and inquire about your goals. To determine if implants are the best solution for you, we'll also assess your jawbone structure and density with our 3D cone beam scanner.

Preparatory Care

To become a dental implant candidate, you may need preparatory procedures. Options include periodontal care for gum disease, tooth extraction, and a sinus lift or bone grafting to replace lost bone tissue.

Implant Placement

For your comfort, we'll numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic. If you desire, we offer sedation dentistry to help you relax. We'll create a custom surgical guide with our 3D printer that allows us to precisely place your implant. Once your implant is placed, we may place a temporary restoration so you don't have to go another day without a renewed smile.

Healing Period

Your titanium implant will have to fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. This takes about three to six months.

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has fused with the jaw, small incisions will be made in the gums to allow a connector piece called an abutment to be attached to the implant. It will take about two weeks for the gums to heal around the abutment.

Crown Planning

While we can use our CEREC® machine to make same-day crowns in our Birmingham office, some cases may require us to work with a trusted local prosthodontist to create your custom crown. Either way, you can rest assured that you will receive a lifelike restoration that functions just like a regular tooth.

Restoration Placement

You will return to our office where your dentist will check that your crown fits comfortably and looks seamless. When both of you are satisfied with the results, the restoration will be attached to your abutment and titanium implant.

How long do dental implants last?

When cared for properly, your dental implants could last the rest of your life. However, your crown, bridge or denture will have to be replaced eventually. Restorations typically last about 10-15 years.

How do I care for my dental implants?

You can care for your implants and restoration much like you care for your natural teeth. Brush twice a day, floss once a day, and attend routine checkups with our Birmingham dentists every six months.
