Restore Your Smile and Bite with Dental Implants
Missing teeth can have a significant impact on your quality of life. You may not feel completely confident with your smile, and eating and speaking may be compromised. With dental implants offered at Dr. Burton Gooch’s Birmingham practice, you can enjoy the restored smile and function you have been missing. Implants, tiny posts that are embedded in the jaw, can support a range of dental prostheses, including crowns and dentures. Whether you are missing one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth, this versatile restorative procedure offers a number of benefits over other treatment options. What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically placed in the jawbone. Implants are designed to support restorations above your gum line, including a single, custom-designed porcelain crown, or partial or full dentures. If Dr. Gooch determines that your jawbone is not dense or strong enough for implants, he may perform bone grafting surgery to prepare your mouth for successful implant surgery.
Dr. Gooch uses guided implant surgery, which refines placement by predicting possible outcomes. First, he will take digital impressions of your mouth using cone beam imaging technology. Next, he will upload the 3-D images onto a computer to use with CAD/CAM software, which allows him to draw up precise plans for the design that will guide the placement of your implants. Once the implant has been placed, osseointegration will occur - a process in which the implant fuses with the surrounding bone. After healing is complete, roughly four to six months later, you can return to our office to receive your permanent restoration.
Dr. Gooch offers a range of implant treatment options which can be tailored to meet each patient's unique needs. Popular implant options include:
- Individual Implants: An individual implant is topped with a custom-designed dental crown which is used to replace a single missing tooth.
- Implant-Retained Full Dentures: Rather than relying on natural suction and adhesives, implant-retained dentures, also called overdentures, are secured by attaching snugly to implants. Dr. Gooch will place four or more implants to support a full denture. Although this type of restoration has added stability, implant-supported dentures can be removable for easy maintenance and cleaning.
- Implant-Retained Partial Dentures: Like implant-retained full dentures, partials snap into place, and are used to replace a number of missing teeth along one dental arch.
- Fixed Hybrid Dentures and Bridges: Fixed hybrid dentures and fixed hybrid bridges are similar to implant-retained dentures and partials, but instead of snapping into place, these prostheses screw into place for a more permanent restorative solution.
Many of our patients with traditional dentures can benefit from implant placement as well. If you already have a customized denture, Dr. Gooch can turn it into an implant-retained denture for a more stable, reliable restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
In addition to providing unparalleled stability, dental implants are the only restorative option which preserve overall oral health by maintaining a strong jawbone. Once teeth are extracted or fall out, the surrounding bone begins to be resorbed by the body. Implants stimulate the healthy production of bone tissue, which can also prevent your remaining teeth from loosening and shifting into empty spaces.
