Dental Implants

Dental implants get high marks for restoring missing teeth beautifully, but the benefits go far beyond looks alone.

In addition to restoring your smile, dental implants prevent the bone atrophy that affects the jaw following tooth loss.

Gooch Family Dental in Birmingham, AL, uses the latest implant technology for long-lasting, natural-looking results.

Find Your Smile Again

Why Replace Missing Teeth? Dental Implants Provide Cosmetic and Practical Benefits

Dental implants are the most trusted and reliable tooth replacement solution in dentistry. They are also the only option that maintains bone in your jaw to avoid future complications.

Traditional bridges and dentures can replace missing teeth, but they lack tooth roots. Without the root to stimulate it, your jaw will deteriorate in that area, potentially leading to nearby teeth migrating into the gap.

That movement can lead to uneven wear and a misaligned bite, which can damage more teeth. If you are missing a significant number of teeth, your receding jawbone can even cause premature aging or lead to additional tooth loss.

Implants can prevent these problems because they stimulate your jawbone and support restorations to replace teeth above the gumline. Let the dentists at our Birmingham dental office explain your options to replace missing teeth and prevent further complications.

All-on-4 Dental Implants Open up New Possibilities

all-on-4 dental implant

Have you been rejected for implant-supported dentures before due to a lack of bone tissue? Thanks to advances in dentistry, now may be a great time to try again.

Our Birmingham dentists can place All-on-4® dental implants, an effective system that needs just four implants to secure a full arch denture in place. Because they need fewer implants, they're easier to qualify for — and you may not even need bone grafting to become a candidate.

Going to the Dentist Is Simpler Than Ever With Our Two Trusted Sedation Options

Each time we conduct oral surgery, we will use an anesthetic to prevent pain. But what about anxiety? Patients who are highly sensitive or are anxious about undergoing dental treatments appreciate our sedation options, like:

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Patients who want to feel alert right after their treatment often prefer nitrous oxide. This safe gas is adjustable, so you'll be completely comfortable throughout your treatment. Once the appointment ends, the effects will quickly wear off, so you can drive yourself home.

For a deeper level of relaxation, we can prescribe a calming medication. This pill will allow your mind and body to feel fully at ease during treatment. Just remember to have a trusted friend or family member drive you to and from our Birmingham office.

A Compassionate Dental Team Makes All the Difference

"This was a top notch, hands down best dental practice I've seen. Excellent customer service, pleasant and friendly staff. Honest and helpful doctor and assistant. It was a delight to be there. It's a beautiful place as well. We are moving out of state but my husband will be coming back here for dental services when needed." Brenda Smith

A Closer Look at Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small threaded post, typically made from biocompatible titanium, that replaces the root portion of a missing tooth. Once it is placed by our Birmingham dentists, it goes through osseointegration. After an implant has been placed and osseointegration has occurred, we can attach a connector piece called an abutment and the final restoration, resulting in a complete tooth replacement from root to crown.

Dental Implant Timeline

Have you lost a tooth? Gooch Family Dental offers titanium implants — a crucial component of a lasting solution. Depending on your needs, your dental implant timeline may vary slightly, but will generally include these steps:

Our advanced 3D scanner and printer make implant placement more precise.
Our advanced 3D scanner and printer make implant placement more precise.

Consultation

Our implant dentists will review your overall health. To determine if implants are an appropriate solution, we'll also assess your jawbone structure and density with our 3D cone beam scanner.

Preparatory Care

To become a dental implant candidate, you may need preparatory procedures. Options include periodontal care for gum disease, tooth extraction, and sinus lifts and bone grafting to replenish lost bone tissue.

Implant Placement

For comfort, we'll numb the implant area. If you desire, we offer sedation dentistry to keep you comfortable. During dental implant surgery, we will use a custom surgical guide created specifically for you to precisely place your titanium implant.

Healing Period

The next step is to allow the titanium implant and jawbone to fuse together in a process called osseointegration. This takes about three to six months.

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has fused with the jaw, small incisions will be made in the gums to allow a connector piece called an abutment to be attached to the implant. It will take about two weeks for the gums to heal, leaving the abutment accessible above the gumline.

Crown Planning

While we can use our CEREC® machine to make same-day crowns in our Birmingham office, our team will typically refer out to a trusted local prosthodontist to create your custom crown. Either way, you can rest assured that you will receive a lifelike restoration that functions just like a regular tooth.

Restoration Placement

You will return to our office where your dentist will check that your crown fits comfortably and looks attractive. When both of you are satisfied with the results, the restoration will be attached to your abutment and titanium implant.

I don’t think anybody’s stress level compares to mine when it comes to the dentist. I’ve always had a fear since I was a child, from the noises, to the needles, etc. however, Dr. Sugg was AMAZING! From start to finish she was patient, concerned, fast, and willing to oblige. I’d recommend her and the company in general on any given day.

Does Insurance Cover Implants?

/

Despite the overwhelming benefits of dental implants, they are not covered by insurance. However, restorations like dentures and bridges are often eligible for coverage. Insurance may also help with the cost of preparatory procedures like tooth extraction and bone grafting.

Cost of Dental Implants Initial Cost vs. Total Cost

a man paying his dentist

Traditional bridges and dentures typically cost less initially when compared to dental implants. However, we advise our Birmingham patients to think about long-term costs too.

For example, traditional partial dentures can weaken the natural teeth that support them, leading to a need for additional dental treatments. Likewise, a traditional bridge can cause the natural teeth supporting it to fail, leading to costly fixes. Traditional dentures require ongoing adjustments as the jaw changes, costing both time and money.

With the proper care, dental implants can last for decades or even a lifetime. Only the restoration would need to be replaced.

Are You Concerned About the Cost of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an investment in your oral health and your quality of life. Our team in Birmingham will go out of their way to help you take full advantage of your insurance benefits. And, to cover out-of-pocket costs, we accept CareCredit®, a third-party dental financing company endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA). Their low-interest and interest-free payment plans can make implants a fit for virtually any budget.

Dental Implant FAQ

Will I have a space in my smile until my permanent restoration is placed?

No. Thanks to temporary restorations you can enjoy a beautiful smile as you wait for your mouth to heal. Once your abutments have been attached and you've healed completely, you will receive your permanent crown, bridge, or denture.

Will anyone be able to see my abutments or implants?

No. Dental restorations are designed to fit precisely over your implants and abutments so all people will see is a beautiful set of teeth.

What's better: fixed implant-supported dentures or snap-on dentures?

Implant-supported dentures can either be screwed onto titanium implants or snap onto them. While snap-on dentures are much more secure than traditional dentures, they don't offer the same security as a fixed restoration. Our team will review your options with you during your consultation.
