What Is a Root Canal?

  • Decay and injury to a tooth, including a fracture, can expose its soft, inner pulp to bacteria. This can lead to a painful, potentially dangerous infection.
  • When the tissue within your roots becomes infected or inflamed, the condition can cause extreme discomfort, necessitating immediate care.
  • A root canal clears out the infection and any damaged tissue, saving your tooth from extraction. It also protects the weakened tooth with a lifelike dental crown.
  • Fortunately, our highly skilled dentists offer nearly painless, efficient root canal therapy at our Birmingham, AL, practice.

What Can Happen If I Don't Seek Treatment?

Extraction

If the infection becomes too severe, your dentist may not be able to save your tooth. Extraction may be the next step.

Surgery

If the affected tooth is extracted, you may need expensive dental implant surgery to stop your jawbone from shrinking, in addition to a restoration to fill in the gap between your teeth.

Spreading Infection

Over time, the decay can create a hole in your tooth. Then the bacterial infection can spread to your jaw, teeth, and blood.

Severe Tooth Pain Could Mean an Infection Schedule an Exam with Dr. Gooch Today

If your tooth is infected, delaying treatment could lead to intense pain, an extraction followed by dental implant surgery, or the infection spreading to neighboring teeth, your gums, and or even your bloodstream. This is why getting your tooth checked now is of the utmost importance.

Dr. Gooch and his team will use the most advanced digital technology in dentistry, as well as gentle sedation dentistry, if needed, to make your root canal procedure and crown placement as comfortable and convenient as possible. How Do I Know If My Tooth is Infected?

If your tooth is infected or the pulp is inflamed, you are likely an excellent candidate for a root canal. Common symptoms that point to the need for root canal treatment include:

  • Pimple or sore on the side of your mouth or gum that drains, or heals and returns
  • Pain and sensitivity during chewing
  • Generalized pain or an aching sensation
  • New sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Swollen gum tissue around the tooth
  • Large cavity, or broken or fractured tooth

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, schedule an appointment immediately to preserve your overall oral health. Dr. Gooch can use safe, precise digital x-rays and other advanced methods to quickly determine the cause of your discomfort.

A Closer Look at a Root Canal

Root canal therapy, often simply referred to as “a root canal,” is a treatment performed by a dentist or endodontist to remove inflamed or infected pulp from within the root canals of an affected tooth. The "roots" are actually the hollow canals that house soft tissue, containing blood, vessels, and nerves which supply nutrients to the tooth. When this tissue becomes infected, it compromises your comfort, the health of your tooth, and your overall oral health. Left untreated, your tooth may abscess or the infection may spread to your surrounding tissue and even your jawbone.

What Can I Expect? The Root Canal Timeline

During a root canal, your dentist will remove the unhealthy pulp and repair the tooth at our modern, comfortable Birmingham, AL, practice.
Your dentist will examine the crown and make sure it fits and looks as much like your natural teeth as possible.

Day of Procedure

Your dentist will examine the crown and make sure it fits and looks as much like your natural teeth as possible.
At the beginning of your appointment, Dr. Gooch will numb your tooth and the surrounding tissue. He will use a special rotary tool to make a small hole in your tooth. Then, he will clean out the infected pulp with another set of specialized tools and smooth your tooth’s interior surfaces.
To complete the root canal, Dr. Gooch will fill the tooth with a rubbery substance called gutta percha to strengthen its interior.
Precise 3-D digital imaging will be taken of your damaged tooth and sent to our on-site CEREC® milling machine. A beautiful porcelain crown, customized to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, will be created for you using advanced technology while you relax in one of our heated massage chairs. The milling process takes about an hour.
Your dentist will examine the crown and make sure it fits and looks as much like your natural teeth as possible. Then, and only then, will the crown be bonded in place to restore your affected tooth's appearance and function.

Recovery

/

You may experience some minor sensitivity for a few days after your root canal, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. You should be able to get back to normal the day after your procedure. Keep brushing and flossing as normal to keep the area clean.
