Same-Day Dental Crowns: Streamlined, Efficient Care
When you have a broken tooth or undergo root canal therapy, your tooth is vulnerable to further breakage and bacterial invasion. To restore your tooth to its full beauty and function, your dentist may suggest a crown - a restoration which protects and strengthens a tooth by fully covering it down to the gum line. Although you may be accustomed to the idea of wearing a temporary crown while your permanent crown is prepared, Dr. Burton Gooch prides himself on offering more efficient crown placement. For this reason, we offer same-day dental crowns at our Birmingham practice. Using advanced dental technology, like CAD/CAM and CEREC®, allows us to place patients' custom-fitted crowns in just a single visit. Learn more by scheduling an appointment with us today.
What are Same-Day Crowns?
Same-day crowns are similar to traditional dental crowns, but do not require wait time. The conventional method of creating custom-designed crowns includes taking mold impressions, fitting the patient with a temporary crown, sending the impressions to a lab, and waiting up to two weeks or more for the crown delivery. And once the crown is received, the patient must return for a follow-up visit to place the restoration.
Dr. Gooch offers expedited treatment, thanks to cone beam imaging and CEREC® technology. Rather than use conventional x-rays and mold impressions, Dr. Gooch will take 3-D images of your oral cavity that he will then directly upload to a computer. Next, our CEREC® machine will use CAD/CAM technology to design and create your customized crown. Using your highly precise, digital impressions, the machine will mill a piece of porcelain into your customized restoration in just minutes.
What are the Benefits?
If your tooth is broken, you have a cavity that is too large for a filling, or you come in for root canal treatment, you will likely need a crown. Same-day crowns offer a number of benefits to the patient, including:
- You will not need to wear a temporary, which may fall out or make chewing and speaking difficult.
- You can undergo a root canal and receive your permanent crown in one visit for more streamlined treatment.
- There is no need for follow-up appointments, so you can fit root canal therapy or simple crown placement into your busy schedule.
- Digital impressions use advanced 3-D technology, so there is no need for you to have uncomfortable mold impressions taken.
Dr. Gooch uses all-porcelain crowns which are not only strong, but look extremely natural as well. Traditional dental porcelain is typically used for crowns that are placed over patients' front teeth. For back teeth, Dr. Gooch may recommend e.max® porcelain crowns, which are five times more durable than traditional porcelain.
