Dental Crowns

Crowns can repair or replace a damaged or missing tooth. Unfortunately, many practices can't provide a crown in fewer than two visits. But at Gooch Family Dental in Birmingham, AL, we can create and place custom dental crowns in a single visit. Find out why so many patients choose Dr. Burton Gooch when they need a dental crown...

Top Three Benefits  of Dental Crown Treatment at Gooch Family Dental

1. Same-Day Treatment

Our dentists offer a more efficient dental crown placement treatment process. This expedited treatment option is possible due to advanced dental technology. Some of the advantages of same-day crowns include:

No Messy Impressions

Digital impressions use advanced 3-D technology, so there is no need for you to have uncomfortable impressions taken with messy putty.

No Temporary Crowns

You will not need to wear a temporary crown, which saves both time and money.

One Appointment

You can undergo a root canal or other treatment and receive your permanent crown in one visit for more streamlined treatment. There is no need for follow-up appointments, so you can fit your dentistry needs into your busy schedule.

No Wait Time

With traditional crowns that are made in a lab, dentists have to wait two weeks or more for crown delivery, and a second appointment is then needed to place the crown. As a patient of Gooch Dental, you'll be able to resume chewing, enunciating, and feeling good about your smile before you leave our office.

3. Comfort

Many patients get nervous and feel apprehensive when visiting the dentist. We want to make the dental crown treatment process as comfortable as possible for patients. That is why we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation. We also use a desensitizing agent with any crown that we place to reduce discomfort during and after treatment.

Nitrous Oxide

nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is inhaled during the appointment to help you feel more relaxed. Our dentists can administer nitrous oxide throughout treatment as needed to alleviate any fear or anxiety you may experience. After your dental crown is placed, the effects of this sedation option wear off quickly so you can safely drive yourself home.

Oral Sedation

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, we use medications like Valium or Ativan to put patients into a relaxed state. The medication is taken before treatment so the calming effects have set in by the time you arrive for your appointment. The effects of the medication also take time to wear off, so patients who choose this option need to have a driver for safety reasons.

Dental Crowns Can Improve Your Oral Health

Dental crowns do more than make your smile look better. Here are some health benefits that you can look forward to once you have your permanent crowns placed out our Birmingham, AL, practice:

Stronger Bite

Porcelain crowns increase the strength of your bite. Having crowns can help you chew comfortably and properly.

Restore Balance

Crowns can restore the natural balance of your bite if you have worn or unusually shaped teeth. A more balanced bite will reduce your risk of TMJ disorder and other potential dental issues.

Less Pain

Dental crowns reduce tooth sensitivity, discomfort, and pressure felt in damaged teeth.

CEREC Technology For High-Quality Same-Day Porcelain Crowns

All-porcelain crowns are strong and look extremely natural. At our Birmingham practice, our dentists typically use traditional dental porcelain for crowns that are placed over the patient's front teeth.

For the back teeth, we may recommend e.max® porcelain, which is five times more durable than traditional porcelain. The dental crowns are fabricated using the CEREC system, which combines 3D imaging, design software, and milling technology into one machine.

A Closer Look At Dental Crown Uses

damaged tooth

Damaged Tooth

If you have a damaged tooth, it becomes increasingly vulnerable to further breakage and bacterial invasion. That is why we often recommend a crown to treat a broken tooth, a cavity that is too large for a filling, or a tooth that has undergone a root canal. To restore your tooth to its full beauty and function, our dentists can place a crown, which protects and strengthens the tooth by completely covering it down to the gum line.

dental implant

Missing Tooth

If you have a single missing tooth, there are two restorations that can replace it: a traditional bridge or a dental implant-supported crown. Of these two restorations, an implant-retained crown is considered the superior option. The dental implant is placed in the jawbone and becomes permanently fused during the healing process. Because the implant replaces the roots, it provides the stimulation necessary to halt the bone atrophy that follows tooth loss.

The Same-Day Crowns Timeline

Whether you have a single broken tooth or several damaged teeth, CEREC crowns can restore your smile in just one appointment. This is how the CEREC system makes same-day crowns possible:

3D Impressions

Rather than using messy, sticky putty impressions, we will take 3-D images of your mouth at our Birmingham office.

Design

The 3D images are directly uploaded to the CEREC's software system, enabling us to use CAD/CAM technology to design and craft your customized dental crown.

Fabrication & Placement

Using your highly precise impressions, along with our design specifications, the CEREC system at our Birmingham office will create your customized restoration from a single block of porcelain chosen to match the color of your teeth. Next, we will check the fit and make any necessary adjustments before bonding the crown into place.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

With proper aftercare, your crown can last as long as 15 years. All you have to do is care for your crown and oral health like normal. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, and visit our Birmingham office every six months for an exam and cleaning. It is also important to avoid biting down on hard objects that can damage, crack, or dislodge the dental crown.

What to Do About Damaged Crowns

While durable, a permanent crown can chip or crack just like a natural tooth. When this happens, the capped tooth structure is vulnerable to further damage and decay. You may also notice increased sensitivity if part of the natural tooth is exposed by the damage to the crown.

The dentists at Gooch Family Dental can help repair or replace broken restorations, allowing you to bite, chew, and smile with ease. A temporary crown can be placed to help alleviate soreness if necessary.

If your crown is chipped or cracked, give our dentists a call.

I had an issue with a molar that needed to be fixed right away. We moved from out of state and didn’t have a dentist yet but they were able to fit me in this morning. I’m so blessed they were able to accommodate me! Dr. Andrews is wonderful and his assistant Brenda is a gem! They were able to make my crown in house and place it in all on one visit! Now that’s something I’ve never experienced before! I’ll be back for sure!
